Description:
The Hospital Admissions with Opioid Toxicity Poster is part of a pharmacy research project that will be exhibited and presented at a pharmacy convention. The aim of the research was to quantify and describe opioid toxicity-related hospital admissions in South Australia over a period of approximately three years.

The findings of the research project underscore the significant burden that opioid toxicity-related hospital admissions place on both the healthcare system and the individuals affected. They also highlight the pressing need for judicious opioid prescribing, education on safe storage of opioids, and strategies to minimise opioid-related harm.
Brief:
The objective was to design an aesthetically pleasing poster that effectively communicates the key findings of the research project while standing out in a crowded exhibition of hundreds of posters. The poster will be displayed alongside a researcher who will provide further insight into the project. In addition, accompanying social media graphics that complement the poster’s visual identity are needed for promotion on social media channels.
Furthermore, the researchers sought to ensure that the poster’s graphics, typography, and colour scheme align with the new branding style guide launched by the institution. This ensures consistency and enhances the poster’s visual appeal, setting it apart from the other exhibits.
Solution:
The initial step in poster design was to identify the critical information that required communication to the audience and ensure its presentation in a clear and concise manner for easy comprehension.

To enhance visual appeal and distinguish the poster, a strategic approach involved the transformation of the graph into a visual element, accentuating the trend it depicted rather than focusing on individual columns of data.

The focal point of the research findings was the data in the form of bullet points. To make this section more approachable and visually engaging, icons were created. These icons not only added to the aesthetic appeal of the poster but also served as an excellent conduit for sharing key findings on social media platforms.
